How Clean Is the Bathroom?

Bathrooms harbour harmful bacteria and sometimes mould and mildew spores that can cause respiratory problems. How Clean Is Your Bathroom?

Footprint Services take Hygiene seriously and we love to share our knowledge to keep you safe at work and at home, here are some helpful tips and habits that can help you keep your bathroom clean at home.

The toilet harbours , bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella and your Shower head alone can harbour Mycobacterium avium, a pathogen linked to pulmonary disease.

Here are some useful tips and what you need to get that bathroom clean and fresh:

  • Gloves
  • Bleach
  • Bi-carb soda
  • Non-abrasive scourers (at least 3 – Toilet, Shower and sink)
  • Bucket
  • Toilet brush
  • Clean rags (at least five small and two large)
  • Floor cleaner
  • Mop
  • Glass cleaner
  • Squeegee, lint-free cloth or old newspapers

Start at the top: Pour white vinegar into a plastic grocery bag (enough to fully submerge the showerhead nozzle) and tie it in place for an overnight soaking. Remove it in the morning and run the water for a minute.
Wash your plastic shower curtains in the washing machine with your regular detergent and a few old towels, which act as scrubbers to get rid of soap scum and mildew. Rehang to dry.
Shower doors, make a paste by mixing a few drops of white vinegar to a cup of baking soda; apply it directly to the door. Let sit for an hour, then rub with a microfiber cloth. Rinse and buff dry with a fresh, dry microfiber cloth.

Bath tubs

Wet the tub with hot water and apply a bathroom cleaner and let sit for 15 minutes before scrubbing with a non-scratch scourer.

Helpful Habits!: Wipe all surfaces after showering or bathing, and leave the window open for one hour a day to lower the room’s humidity level.

Dip an old unused toothbrush brush in straight bleach  and scrub then rinse well. Seal grout every six months to help prevent moisture and grime from infiltrating

Be sure to ventilate the room.

Tile, Walls, Ceiling

Spray tile, countertops, walls, and the ceiling with all-purpose cleaner and let sit for 20 minutes. Then wipe down all surfaces with a clean cloth. To reach high spots, use a clean, dry microfiber mop.
To minimize water marks on ceramic tile, apply a coat of car wax once a year

Mildew-resistant paint will also help on untiled walls and ceilings

Start by pouring a cup of baking soda and bleach into the bowl. Let sit for a few minutes; Scrub with a non-abusive scouring pad and flush. Then tackle the toilet brush itself, Secure the brush handle between the already-cleaned seat and the basin so that it hovers over the bowl; pour bleach over the bristles. Let stand for a few minutes, then douse with a pitcher of clean water. Next, fill the brush canister with warm, soapy water and let sit; dump the dirty water into the toilet and flush

Helpful Habits!: Always close the lid when you flush and add of anti-bacterial to your toilet brush holder – enough to cover the bristles, by doing this you will kill the bacteria after use and keep the bathroom smelling fresh

Pour white vinegar or baking soda down the drain and flush with hot water.

Start by pouring a cup of baking soda and bleach into the basin (Plug in)and scrub with a non-abrasive scourer, rinse with warm water and let drain, wipe down with an anti bacterial and dry.
Helpful Habits!: Dab baby oil on the soap dish to keep the bar from sticking and sliming up. Alternatively use pump-action soap dispenser which will minimise germs.

If you lather your hands before you turn your taps on you will minimise the germs that are often found on bathroom taps, remember to wash your hands properly with warm water and soap , rinse the taps before turning them off, dry your hand and the taps!

Ventilation Fan

Turn off the ventilation fan at the mains! Remove the fan blades and fan guard, soak in warm water and bleach for about 20min, wipe down the sides of the ventilation fan housing with an anti bacterial. Dry the fan blades and guard before returning them to the housing

Spray mirrors with glass cleaner, then use a lint-free cloth or a news paper to wipe clean for a streak-free shine.

Housework and the 1950’s

How much has our view on housework changed since the 1950’s?

A recent study of the average Australian household by the Australian Institute of Family Studies has examined Australian households and how women spend their time at home, the study found that women spend nearly twice as much time doing housework than men.

Women with children aged 5 and under spend up to 32 hours a week on housework and women with children over  5 years old , still doing up to 29 hours a week and if you include a full time job women often work up to 88 hours a week!

Women are achieving goals and targets in the workplace and often surpass their male counter parts but in seems women are losing the battle on the home front with 62% of employed women, with children saying they always feel overworked, tired and rushed.

So the answer to the question:  “How much has our view on housework changed since the 1950’s?” Not much! It’s seems that society is still stuck in the 1950’s in regards to the household cleaning, so come on guys take up the broom and dish cloth and help the team!

Start the Year Fresh with a Clean House

Don’t where to start?

Here are some tips that will help you with that New Year clean:

Do the hardest jobs first

For most people cleaning isn’t on the list of favourite things to do. One way to deal with it is to tackle the big jobs first and ticking them off as you go, Commonly theses jobs would include; cleaning the oven, the fridge, the windows and toilets.

You will have that clean fresh feel about the place even though the floors aren’t vacuumed, the dusting hasn’t been done ect these jobs can be done over the course of a week and don’t take that long to do.

Use eco-friendly products

No we aren’t saying go out and buy brand X,Y and Z because it is “eco-friendly” but harsh chemical can be harmful to you and the environment, for household jobs use cleaning solutions made from Vinegar, lemon juice, eucalyptus oil, bi-carbonate soda, coffee and coca cola!

  • Yes! Coca Cola, Coke can be used to clean toilets and clear blocked drains – consider that next time your drinking a can of coke!
  • Vinegar is ideal for cleaning windows and shower glass
  • Lemon juice is good for cleaning out fridges and cupboards leaving a pleasant smell
  • Eucalyptus oil is excellent for removing stains in materials – Table cloth, Cloths, Curtain ect
  • Bi-carbonate soda make cleaning sinks easy and can be use for both ceramic and stainless steel without leaving a residue
  • Coffee is a natural deodorizer simply leave a small open container in the fridge and cupboards – if you aren’t a coffee fan bi-Carbonate soda will have the same effect without a smell

Finally! Make a list and check it twice

Planning exactly what you want to do, set yourself goals and check off things you’ve already done.

Lists are also great if you’re dividing the clean between several people. Assign different jobs to each person and get them to mark off what’s complete.

Making That First Impression Count!

Clients will often judge the way you do business by the cleanliness of your work spaces, so it is imperative that your office is clean and tidy outside and inside.

Your employees are also affected by the cleanliness of their working environment the saying “Tidy desk, Tidy mind” hold true here and will create a more productive and organised team environment

Making a Good First Impression

It takes about 12 seconds for people to form lasting opinions. If your place of business is poorly maintained you are running the risk of turning away prospective clients, potential new employees and commercial opportunities.

Clients will often be asked to what in the reception area, so it ideal to make them as comfortable as possible, offensive smells, mould, cobwebs carpet stains, dirty furniture just to name a few can be often overlooked by employees because “they are use to it”

It is important to hire a Commercial Cleaning Service that takes pride in their work, have attention to detail, guarantee the their work and onsite team leaders so that minor details are not overlooked.

Establish an Enticing Entrance way

The exterior of your establishment is equally important, sidewalks widows, entrance doors and signage can be often overlooked, these are the very first impression that a potential client will notice.

A dirty and unsightly entrance can often turn people away before they have even entered your office no matter how clean, tidy and professional your business is not getting potential clients through the door can make a huge impact on revenue.

Hiring a Commercial Cleaning Service that provides a maintenance service is definitely important as broken locks, doors, tiles and equipment can not only put you at risk of liability claims, it can compromise the security of your premises, the effectiveness of your staff and can impact the way you as a business is viewed by your clients.

Wash areas and Toilets

Wash areas and toilets are surprisingly overlooked, a wash area and toilet that is well-stocked, clean and free of odours will be appreciated by your employees and clients, hygiene is extremely important and says a lot about your business and employees. Let’s face it most people don’t like public toilets because they are often dirty, they smell and under stocked!
