How Clean Is the Bathroom?

Bathrooms harbour harmful bacteria and sometimes mould and mildew spores that can cause respiratory problems. How Clean Is Your Bathroom?

Footprint Services take Hygiene seriously and we love to share our knowledge to keep you safe at work and at home, here are some helpful tips and habits that can help you keep your bathroom clean at home.

The toilet harbours , bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella and your Shower head alone can harbour Mycobacterium avium, a pathogen linked to pulmonary disease.

 

Here are some useful tips and what you need to get that bathroom clean and fresh:

  • Gloves
  • Bleach
  • Bi-carb soda
  • Non-abrasive scourers (at least 3 – Toilet, Shower and sink)
  • Bucket
  • Toilet brush
  • Clean rags (at least five small and two large)
  • Floor cleaner
  • Mop
  • Glass cleaner
  • Squeegee, lint-free cloth or old newspapers

Shower

Start at the top: Pour white vinegar into a plastic grocery bag (enough to fully submerge the showerhead nozzle) and tie it in place for an overnight soaking. Remove it in the morning and run the water for a minute.
Wash your plastic shower curtains in the washing machine with your regular detergent and a few old towels, which act as scrubbers to get rid of soap scum and mildew. Rehang to dry.
Shower doors, make a paste by mixing a few drops of white vinegar to a cup of baking soda; apply it directly to the door. Let sit for an hour, then rub with a microfiber cloth. Rinse and buff dry with a fresh, dry microfiber cloth.

Bath tubs

Wet the tub with hot water and apply a bathroom cleaner and let sit for 15 minutes before scrubbing with a non-scratch scourer.

Helpful Habits!: Wipe all surfaces after showering or bathing, and leave the window open for one hour a day to lower the room’s humidity level.

Grout

Dip an old unused toothbrush brush in straight bleach  and scrub then rinse well. Seal grout every six months to help prevent moisture and grime from infiltrating

Be sure to ventilate the room.

Tile, Walls, Ceiling

Spray tile, countertops, walls, and the ceiling with all-purpose cleaner and let sit for 20 minutes. Then wipe down all surfaces with a clean cloth. To reach high spots, use a clean, dry microfiber mop.
To minimize water marks on ceramic tile, apply a coat of car wax once a year

Mildew-resistant paint will also help on untiled walls and ceilings

Toilet

Start by pouring a cup of baking soda and bleach into the bowl. Let sit for a few minutes; Scrub with a non-abusive scouring pad and flush. Then tackle the toilet brush itself, Secure the brush handle between the already-cleaned seat and the basin so that it hovers over the bowl; pour bleach over the bristles. Let stand for a few minutes, then douse with a pitcher of clean water. Next, fill the brush canister with warm, soapy water and let sit; dump the dirty water into the toilet and flush

Helpful Habits!: Always close the lid when you flush and add of anti-bacterial to your toilet brush holder – enough to cover the bristles, by doing this you will kill the bacteria after use and keep the bathroom smelling fresh

Sink

Pour white vinegar or baking soda down the drain and flush with hot water.

Start by pouring a cup of baking soda and bleach into the basin (Plug in)and scrub with a non-abrasive scourer, rinse with warm water and let drain, wipe down with an anti bacterial and dry.
Helpful Habits!: Dab baby oil on the soap dish to keep the bar from sticking and sliming up. Alternatively use pump-action soap dispenser which will minimise germs.

If you lather your hands before you turn your taps on you will minimise the germs that are often found on bathroom taps, remember to wash your hands properly with warm water and soap , rinse the taps before turning them off, dry your hand and the taps!

Ventilation Fan

Turn off the ventilation fan at the mains! Remove the fan blades and fan guard, soak in warm water and bleach for about 20min, wipe down the sides of the ventilation fan housing with an anti bacterial. Dry the fan blades and guard before returning them to the housing

Mirrors

Spray mirrors with glass cleaner, then use a lint-free cloth or a news paper to wipe clean for a streak-free shine.

Every year during the colder months’ employees begin to catch colds and flu viruses. The flu is highly contagious and can cause aches and pains and a difficulty concentrate which can lead to mistakes being made!

The flu tends to last about three to four days but you can feel weak for more than 7 to 10 days. Every year about 109 million workdays are lost due to the flu, according to the recent studies

There are ways to decrease these numbers, and keep the flu out of your office…

  1. Keeping Sick Employees out of the Office 
    • Have a good sick day policy in place which employees feel comfortable using. Employees need to understand that you prefer they stayed at home if they have the flu and not spread it around the office.
    • Normally in Australia policies will have a one or two day “grace” period – meaning that a doctors certificate isn’t required if the employee only had one or two days off.
  • If you have Casual employees that are not normally subject to “sick days” you might want to look into offering them a sick day policy as well , so they too will feel comfortable staying at home if they are sick, but if you find a common pattern emerging it might not be the flu!
  • Unhappy employees can often call in sick because they don’t want to come into work, you need to find out why in a diplomatic and caring way, they could have issues at home, bullied in the workplace or feel unappreciated, whatever the reason it is important you find out why – Low Morale is more contagious than the Flu!
  1. Sanitize – 
    • Previous FootPrint Services Blogs have mentioned the importance of personal Hygiene and office cleanliness, now that we are coming into the colder seasons it is important your employees understand how the spread of germs can occur and that your Commercial Cleaning Company is sanitizing telephones, keyboard and mouse, door handles and other commonly contacted areas.
    • It wouldn’t hurt if you encouraged your employees to sanitize these areas as well using alcohol based sanitizers, you could ask your Commercial Cleaning companies for some tips on what to use and how to do it
    •  Constant reminders in the form of signs is often the best method, such as “Have You Washed Your Hands” as employees exit the bathroom or “Please No Eating At Your Desk” stuck on the fridge, whatever the sign may say employees must understand the importance of not spreading germs around the office.
  1. Communal Dishes 
    • When dishes, glasses and coffee mugs are cleaned in a dishwasher they are sterilized. Dishes cleaned by hand will still harbour gems if a dirty dish cloth was used or just rinsed because someone was in a hurry!. A Dish washer is a good investment that could help keep the flu out of your office. Make sure you purchase a dishwasher with a sanitize option.

Alternatively if you have a basic tea and coffee station or kitchenette encourage employees to bring their own mugs or purchase mugs that have your employees name on them or something that describes them positively and tastefully.

Soap & water Vs. Alcohol based hand rubs

A picture of a man’s staring eyes and a clean citrusy smell, have been found to significantly boost hand hygiene – according to a new European behavioural science study.

The study showed that a process of exposure to certain cues can alter a person’s behaviour, without the person involved being aware of the impact of the cue.

Subjects were observed in normal hand hygiene practice and hygiene compliance was noted.  Two additional cues were then introduced.  Subjects were given access to a hand sanitizing gel dispenser (an alcohol rub) with a ‘citrusy smell’ and above the gel dispenser was placed a photograph of a pair of human eyes*.  When these two conditions or cues were present, results showed a 42% increase in hand hygiene compliance.

*It was observed that hand hygiene compliance only increased significantly when the photograph displayed above the
dispenser was of a pair of male eyes.  No significant increase noted when the eyes were female – this was true for both male and female subjects observed.

Alcohol based preparations have two distinct advantages over soap & water:

  • Kill many more germs
  • Less drying to your skin

When should you wash your hands with soap & water?

  • When hands are visibly dirty
  • Before you eat
  • Before you prepare food items
  • After touching raw meats – e.g. chicken or beef
  • After touching animals or pets
  • After blowing your nose or sneezing
  • After going to the toilet

When should you use alcohol based hand rubs?

  • For routine cleaning of hands anytime they are visibly clean
  • If you have contact with contaminated objects in the environment – e.g. dirty tissues/nappies
  • Whenever you want to decontaminate your hands

Hand Hygiene Tips

According to recent studies by the Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), correct hand washing procedures is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of gems that cause infections and illness.

Here is 4 thing to practice in the workplace to maintain a healthier working ,so spread the word not the germs:

 

  1. Know when to wash! It is still important to regularly wash your hands, it is even more important to wash after certain activities such as using the rest room, before and after food preparation and in between prepping stages, touching animals, touch your face including blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.

It is also recommended that you wash your hands after coming into contact with frequently used items such as door knobs and light switches

 

  1. Use soap! By law all Australian soap products must contain anti bacterials and washing hands with saop and warm water is the best and most effective way to reduce the the spread of Bacteria and Gems on the hands.

Make sure you include the areas between the fingers and half way up your forearm, creating a lather for about 15 – 30 seconds – sing your favourite songs chorus to pass the time.

 

  1. Dry Hands, Bacteria and germs thrive in moist and warm environments, drying your hands while help prevent the spread and the growth of germs and bacteria.

 

  1. Use paper towel! Studies have shown that paper towel can in fact remove bacteria and reduce their numbers

Recent studies have shown that air-dryers actually spread bacteria and contaminate the other rest room users and can blow bacteria around the room up to six feet from the device.
